A Company formed in London in 1824, originally for the purpose of cultivating a million acres of land in New South Wales. In 1826 it was offered by the Home Government the Newcastle Colliery, then being run at a loss by the Colonial Government. After several years' negotiations, the Company accepted the colliery and a further grant of Newcastle land, thereby obtaining a virtual monoply of the Colony's coal trade. The Peel River Land and Mineral Co. Ltd. was formed in 1853 to mine gold on the Peel River estate, a block of land granted to the Australian Agricultural Company.
